On believing in people

People need to be believed in.
There’s nothing quite like
The belief of another
To prop you up
When your own track record
Doesn’t lend you the strength you need
To stand up straight.
Sometimes we rise
Simply because others believe
We can.
Indeed it is not only the promising ones
That need it,
But especially
The misfits, the late bloomers
And the ones who’s names no one seems to
Remember –
They too could do with a motley crew
Of true believers
Who see things in them
That few others see.
Far from being a reward for good behaviour
Belief is a gravitational force
Strong enough to raise someone’s tides
For a lifetime.
