The only problem with
“Living our best lives”
Is that we don’t live them
Every day.
We speak a lot about
Positioning ourselves
With our best foot forward
As though that foot
Is the only one we have,
As though some days
Aren’t dark
Some nights-
Too long,
Some choices made-
Unfortunate.
None of us win
Every day
Every time.
We all have a back foot-
The stinky one with a mangled toe
That most people would
Never see,
But if we are to ever truly walk
With another,
This stinky foot,
This unsightly, unpleasant part
Of who we are
Is an undeniable part of ourselves
That they, and us,
Will have to come to see for
What it is
And walk together
In earnest.
