Underselling ‘better’

Improvement is a gift
We can offer ourselves
Through focused effort
And applied hope.
Comparison
Is a wound we can afflict
Ourselves with
That will bleed bright red
Even on our best days.
We tend to undersell
Being ‘better’
As the thing you reach for
When you’ve tried and failed
At being the best,
But the reality is
If you’re ever going to be
The best you can be
It would surely help
To attend to your craft
Not the scoreboard.
