When the lights are on us
And our cause is in the news
It feels as though
The wheels of history are turning
In our favor
And will always do so.
But the megaphone of our cultural moment
Is also coupled with a strange kind of
Attention Deficit Disorder
Where the chronic problems of our world
Have been reduced to click-bait and sound bites
Making them just one more thing we aware of
And even deeply moved by
But, like all forms of entertainment,
We eventually grow weary of the cause
In search of another social issue to flirt with.
The feast of global attention
Quickly devolves into a famine of
Global neglect,
Where we know about the collective brokenness of our world
More than ever
Yet feel less, less inclined to do the work
Of healing it.
