Is tricky business.
Because it takes a while
To recognize the things
That you always considered ‘normal’
To really just be white.
Unlearning a strange form of self-policing
That finds many of the non-white
Things about yourself
Somehow problematic.
And doing all this
Without hating yourself
Or your white neighbour,
Because loving both
Isn’t always easy.
Unbuckling whiteness
Is not about resentment
Or censure
But about coming to rest comfortably
In a non-white body
That non-anxiously
Navigates a world
Of ongoing racial tensions
And perpetual inner contradictions.
