Are often not the ones
Best positioned to see everything
For what it really is-
Like a person who’s never gone
Without light,
Straining and struggling to see
In the darkness,
For their eyes are not accustomed
To the experience of those
Who live in the shadows.
Yet their privilege gives them power
That no one else has,
To change the order of things,
To make the room a little easier to be in,
To use that privilege for the good of others.
Feelings of guilt around privilege
Serve no one
And it would be a waste to spend those
Coveted powers
Merely trying to defend yourself.
If life has disproportiately favored you-
Then the task is to appropriate that power for the greatest good,
Not apologise for it.
