Its hard to know
What a human being deserves.
The sun rises on all of us
Even on days when
We’re not our best selves.
Anyone who’s ever ‘made it’
Will tell you
About how ‘getting lucky’
Is as much a part of the outcome
As doing the necessary to
To capitalize on said luck.
We are not self made
Nor are we mere products of nature-
We are fully responsible
For the choices we make
And the consequences thereof,
O, but thank God,
More often than not
We find ourselves on the
Front end of grace and mercy
Drinking from a chalice we could never afford
Eating a meal too gloriously exquisite
To be anything we’ve self-catered
Dining far above our budget-
Not a single breath
We’ve ever taken was earned.
And so wicked, awkward, stumbling humans-
The desperately undeserving
Can be found
Sitting pretty
At the Master’s table.
Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
-Psalm 100:3
