Freedom,
As it turns out,
Comes at a price.
And justice cannot
Be met peacefully.
Righteousness remains unattainable
Without someone getting their hands dirty-
The right kinds of paradox
Will always feel uncomfortable,
A bitter drink with an aftertaste
Of unadulterated nectar.
What then, is this sanitized version
Of social progress that we are
Trying to grasp at?
Calls for ubuntu*
By a diabolically individualistic society?
An appeal for godliness
Without God Himself?
This call for kindness
That turns a blind eye to reckless self-destruction?
This talk of creating a better future
For a generation of people we hardly even understand?
We have the wrong kinds of paradoxes,
The ones that allow us
To celebrate our foolishness
And denigrate our greatness,
Where we have access to more than ever
Yet have never felt so poor,
Where somehow we find ourselves
In a world where
Everything has changed
But really nothing has changed
All at once
*Ubuntu- a quality that includes the essential human virtues; compassion and humanity.
But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!
