There really is no ‘having it all’

Because progress itself
Is a trade off-
Giving up where you are
For where you are headed.
Exchanging the fixed security of childhood
With the random chessboard of adulthood,
The free time of unemployment
Swopped for the limitations of a 9 to 5,
The barrier of being an unknown contender
Givng way to the extensive accountability of being known,
Laying down the endless possibilities of being single and searching,
For the blessed constraint of loving and continuing to love one person-
There is no having it all.
We trade one cocktail of liberties
And restrictions
For another
And we would be foolish
To try and drink from yesterday’s chalice
At today’s feast.
