Last Impressions

There are people
we concluded about
In our hearts
In our minds
Who were not
What we thought
They were.
We just read them wrong.
We could not see
What was right
In front of us.
We saw the hands
That reached out
To help us
As choke-holds
Meant to stop us
From breathing,
We saw deception
In the silence
When it really was
Discretion.
We saw traitors
When our friends
Asked tough questions,
We heard death sentences
When were told
‘Not yet’.
Last impressions:
That moment of
Realization
That
Our instincts led us astray
That
Despite our initial careful analysis-
We were wrong.
