Gratitude vs. Regret

In a single moment

The threshold of a new year is crossed.

The date will change in an instant

But most other things don’t change nearly as fast.

Regret, for example, tends to linger.

It is a deceitful emotion,

It somehow feels like a ‘responsible’ perspective

On things that didn’t quite happen as we hoped.

Yet it tends to inflate our sense of loss

And makes much of what we lack.

Gratitude, also hangs in the air like a fragrance

Leaving a trail of remembrance

Of what we have been blessed with,

Bringing with it a sense of possibility

And hope for what is to come.

As you leave one year and enter another

I hope you carry along with you more gratitude

Than regret.

Happy new year.
